Everything You Need To Know

Common questions about hiking in Gros Morne including gear, fitness, and logistics.

Why choose a guided hike?
While the marked trails are beautiful, a guided hike unlocks the 90% of the park that most tourists miss. We take you to off-trail viewpoints, ensure your safety in rugged terrain, and explain the world-class geology.
How fit do I need to be?
We have a pace for everyone. The Tablelands Off-Trail is moderate and great for active families. The Lookout requires good cardio. Gros Morne Mountain is a strenuous endurance test.
Do I really need hiking boots?
For Tablelands and Mountain hikes, YES. The terrain is rocky and uneven. Sturdy boots with ankle support are essential. Open-toed shoes are never permitted.
Are hiking poles provided?
We recommend bringing your own trekking poles. We have a limited supply of loaner poles available at the shop on a first-come, first-served basis.
What happens if it rains?
We hike rain or shine! However, if high winds or lightning make the route unsafe, our guides will cancel or reroute, and you will be offered a full refund or reschedule.
Is there a bathroom on the trail?
Most backcountry routes do not have facilities. We practice "Leave No Trace." Guides carry sanitation kits and will direct you on how to respectfully use nature’s facilities.
Will we see moose or bears?
Gros Morne has high densities of Moose, Caribou, and Bears. While sightings aren't guaranteed, our guides know the best spots and carry safety deterrents.
Are the black flies bad?
They can be in July. We recommend bringing a head net and insect repellent. Once we get to higher elevations, the wind usually keeps them away.
Can I bring my dog?
For Private Tours, yes! For public group hikes, no. Contact us to book a pet-friendly private adventure for you and your pup.
Is this suitable for children?
Yes! Tablelands is great for kids 8+. For younger children, we strongly recommend a Private Family Tour so we can adjust the pace for little legs.
Do I need a Parks Canada Pass?
Yes. Your tour fee covers the guide but not the Park Entry Pass. You must purchase a pass at the Visitor Centre or online.
Is lunch included?
Lunch is not included. You can bring your own, or add a "Hiker's Packed Lunch" from our partners during the checkout process.
How much water should I bring?
Minimum 1.5 Liters for half-day hikes and 3 Liters for full-day summits. There are no treated water sources in the backcountry.
Where do we meet?
Most tours meet at the Wild Gros Morne Headquarters in Shoal Brook. Your booking confirmation email will have the exact Google Maps link.
Do you offer shuttle services?
For many hikes, we provide transport from our shop to the trailhead. Staying at Waters Edge? You're just a short walk away.
Can I book a private tour?
Yes! We build custom itineraries for couples, corporate groups, and families regularly. Click "Hike Your Own Way" to inquire.
What is your cancellation policy?
We offer a full refund for cancellations made 48 hours in advance. If we cancel due to weather, you get a 100% refund.
Do I need to tip the guide?
Tips are never expected but always appreciated. If your guide made your day special, a standard gratuity is 15-20%.
Can I do Tablelands alone?
You can walk the boardwalk alone, but you'll miss the ridges and canyons. Our exclusive permits take you where regular hikers can't go.
Do you offer winter hiking?
Yes! Check out our Winter & Spring page for backcountry ski touring and snowshoe adventures when the snow falls.
