Gros Morne Fishing FAQ

Everything you need to know to catch the big one in Bonne Bay.

When is the best time for Cod Fishing?
The Recreational Groundfish (Cod) season in Newfoundland typically runs from early July through September. This is the peak time to catch Atlantic Cod. Our "Twilight Fishery" in August is particularly popular for the combination of sunset views and high catch rates.
Do I need a fishing license?
No. When you book a private charter with Wild Gros Morne, all necessary fishing permits and licenses are covered by us. You do not need to purchase a separate license.
Can we keep the fish we catch?
Yes! Retention limits are set by the DFO (typically 5 groundfish per person/day, with a boat maximum of 15). We strictly adhere to sustainable fishing regulations.
Do you fillet the fish for us?
When we return to the dock at The Water's Edge, our guides will gut and, clean your catch for you, free of charge, but we do not fillet. For the amount of fish people catch we do not have the time to do this in between fishing charters.
Will I get sea sick on the boat?
It is very unlikely. Unlike open ocean tours, we operate in the sheltered waters of the South Arm Fjord (Bonne Bay). The high cliffs of the Tablelands block the wind, keeping the water much calmer than the Gulf.
Is this suitable for kids and families?
Yes, we are the #1 choice for families in Gros Morne. Our boats have high gunnels (sides) to keep children safe, and our "Fjord & Fish Safari" is designed specifically for kids with shorter travel times and wildlife viewing.
I have never fished before. Is that okay?
Perfect! 90% of our guests are beginners. Our captains are local experts who will set up your gear, bait your hook, and teach you the traditional "jigging" technique.
Do we have to share the boat with strangers?
No. All Wild Gros Morne fishing charters are 100% Private. You book the whole boat for your group. This ensures a VIP experience without tangled lines or overcrowding.
Can I take my fish home on the plane?
Yes. Many guests freeze their catch and transport it home in a cooler. Airlines flying out of Deer Lake (YDF) are accustomed to this. We recommend freezing your fillets solid the night before you fly.
What other fish can we catch besides Cod?
While Atlantic Cod is the main target, the deep waters of Bonne Bay are also home to Ocean Perch (Redfish), Mackerel, Flounder, Sculpin, and occasionally Halibut, Wolffish, and Skate.
What happens if it rains?
We fish rain or shine! Our 25ft vessels are equipped with a hard-top roof and cabin space to keep you dry. If conditions are unsafe (high winds), we will reschedule or refund your trip.
Are dogs allowed on the boat?
Yes! We are a dog-friendly operator. Your furry friends are welcome aboard our private charters.
Where do we meet?
Our main marina is at "The Water's Edge" in Shoal Brook. However, for guests staying in Rocky Harbour or Norris Point, we offer convenient water-taxi pickups at the Norris Point Public Wharf.
What should we wear?
Dress in layers. Even on sunny days, the air on the water can be cool. We recommend a windbreaker, long pants, and flat, closed-toe shoes (sneakers are fine).
Can we bring food and drinks?
Yes, you are welcome to bring snacks and beverages. We recommend bringing water. Please note that for safety reasons, excessive alcohol consumption is not permitted.
Do you provide life jackets?
Yes, we provide Transport Canada approved PFDs for all guests, including specific sizes for children and toddlers. Safety is our top priority.
How many people can fit on the boat?
Our private charters can accommodate up to 5 guests comfortably. This allows plenty of space for fishing without lines getting crossed.
Is there a washroom on the boat?
No, our boats are designed for day trips. We highly recommend using the clean washroom facilities at our "Water's Edge" marina immediately before departure.
What happens if we catch a Halibut?
Halibut are a prized catch! However our fishing regulations state all halibut must be released during the season. Our guides are experienced in helping you land these large fish and they sure are fun.
Do we need to book in advance?
Yes. Because our charters are private and the cod season is short, spots fill up very quickly. We recommend booking at least 2-3 weeks in advance for July and August dates.
