Gros Morne Kayaking FAQ

Everything you need to know to paddle Bonne Bay like a pro.

Why is the South Arm best for kayaking?
The South Arm of Bonne Bay is the "Sheltered Side." Unlike the open waters near the main channel which fight heavy wind, our fjord location is protected by high walls. This means calmer water, clearer reflections, and the best paddling conditions in the park.
What wildlife will I see?
We paddle through a vibrant marine ecosystem. Sightings of Bald Eagles, Terns, and Harbour Seals are very common. In summer, the South Arm is a feeding ground for Minke Whales. Our quiet kayaks offer the most respectful way to view them.
Is it safe for beginners?
Absolutely. We use wide, stable double sea kayaks that are incredibly difficult to tip. Our guides are Paddle Canada certified and provide full instruction on technique and safety before we leave the shore.
Can I bring my own kayak?
Yes! The best public launch in Gros Morne is at Waters Edge in Shoal Brook. We have a sheltered beach launch, free parking, and a cafe. Stop in for a coffee and local route advice!
Do you offer instruction?
Yes. All tours include basic training. For those wanting to learn rescue skills or advanced paddling, our certified guides offer private instructional sessions.
What is the best time of day to kayak?
Mornings (10 AM) are typically the calmest with the best light for photography. Evenings offer beautiful sunset colors on the Tablelands.
Is the water cold?
Yes, the Atlantic ocean is cold! However, you will be staying dry inside your kayak. We provide spray skirts to keep drips off your lap. If you do capsize (very rare), our guides are trained to get you back in quickly.
Can I kayak to Western Brook Pond?
No. Western Brook Pond is a separate landlocked fjord. You cannot kayak there from the ocean. Our Bonne Bay tours offer similar fjord scenery but with the added bonus of marine wildlife (whales/seals) which you won't see in Western Brook.
Will I see waterfalls?
Yes! The South Arm coastline is dotted with seasonal waterfalls that cascade from the Tablelands plateau directly into the ocean. Some are only visible from a kayak.
Do you rent Stand Up Paddleboards (SUP)?
We focus on sea kayaks for safety and distance, but our partners at TideLine Watersports often have SUP options available. Contact us for availability.
Where do we launch?
We launch from the wharf at Waters Edge Gros Morne in Shoal Brook. It is the most convenient access point with no hauling required.
What is the "Tablelands 360"?
The ultimate combo. Kayak the fjord base in the morning, then hike the Earth's Mantle summit in the afternoon. It combines the park's top two activities into one seamless adventure.
Do you have kayaks for kids?
Yes. We are the only operator with specialized kids' kayaks and small paddles. For tours, children sit safely in the front of a double kayak with a parent in the back.
Do you have fishing kayaks?
Yes! Through TideLine, we offer the park's only specialized fishing kayak rentals. The South Arm is excellent for Cod and Mackerel in season.
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes. July and August sell out fast. We highly recommend booking online to guarantee your spot.
What should I wear?
Dress in synthetic layers (fleece/polyester). Avoid cotton (jeans). Wear sandals or water shoes. We provide PFDs and spray skirts.
Are there bathrooms on site?
Yes. The Waters Edge facility has clean restrooms, a cafe, and a changing area for before and after your paddle.
What happens if it rains?
We paddle in light rain (it makes the waterfalls spectacular!). If there is high wind or lightning, we cancel for safety and offer a full refund or reschedule.
Single vs. Double Kayak?
For tours, we use doubles for speed and stability. For rentals, singles are available but require previous experience and self-rescue knowledge.
Do you sell kayaks?
Yes. We are the demo center for TideLine Watersports, Newfoundland's premier kayak dealer. You can test paddle the best brands right here.
