Gros Morne Kayak Tour FAQ

Everything you need to know about paddling Bonne Bay and the Tablelands.

What makes your kayak tours different?
We paddle the sheltered, less-crowded South side of Bonne Bay. From our launch point, you get immediate, unobstructed views of the ancient Tablelands mantle. We also limit our group sizes to ensure a highly personalized and peaceful experience on the water.
Do I need previous kayaking experience?
Not at all. Our guided kayak tours are designed for beginners. Your expert guide will provide a full land-based safety and paddling lesson before we launch into the calm waters of the fjord.
Where does the kayak tour depart from?
Tours launch directly from our private beach and marina at Water's Edge Campground (232 Bonne Bay Rd) in Shoal Brook. It is the perfect, calm cove for beginners to get comfortable.
Will we see whales or other wildlife?
Bonne Bay is an incredibly rich marine ecosystem. While wildlife is wild and never guaranteed, paddlers frequently spot Minke whales, dolphins, bald eagles, osprey, and seals during our tours.
What kind of kayaks do you use?
We use premium, highly stable tandem (double) and single sea kayaks. Our fleet is meticulously maintained to ensure you are paddling in safe, comfortable, high-performance equipment.
Is sea kayaking safe for children?
Yes! Sea kayaking is a fantastic family activity. We put children in the front seat of a tandem kayak with an adult in the back. This allows the child to paddle when they want or just relax and enjoy the ride.
How long are the guided tours?
Our standard guided kayak tour lasts for approximately 2 to 2.5 hours. This includes the safety briefing, getting fitted for gear, and plenty of time exploring the coastline.
What should I wear for kayaking?
Dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature. We recommend quick-dry athletic clothing, synthetic layers, or fleece. Avoid cotton and denim as they stay cold when wet. A windbreaker and sunglasses are also essential.
Will I get wet or fall in?
Capsizing is extremely rare in our stable sea kayaks. You will likely get a few drips of water from your paddle blades, but you will not be swimming. We also provide spray skirts to keep your lower body dry.
Do you provide life jackets?
Absolutely. We provide high-quality, Transport Canada approved Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) for all guests, and they must be worn and fully buckled at all times while on the dock or the water.
Can we go kayaking if it rains?
Yes! Kayaking in a light rain or mist is actually one of the most magical ways to see the fjord as the clouds roll over the mountains. We provide paddling jackets if needed. We only cancel for high winds or thunderstorms.
Are the tours guided or private?
We offer both! You can join a small-group public tour, or you can book a Private Kayak Charter if you prefer to have a guide exclusively for your own family or friends.
How close is the launch site to the Tablelands?
We are the closest outfitter to the Tablelands! The trailhead is just an 8-minute drive from our dock, and you will paddle directly under the shadow of these massive geological wonders.
Can I bring my camera or smartphone?
Yes, there are endless photo opportunities. However, water and electronics do not mix well. We strongly recommend using a waterproof dry-bag or a floating phone case. Bring them at your own risk.
Is there a weight limit for the kayaks?
Our tandem sea kayaks are designed for heavy loads and can easily accommodate combined weights of up to 500 lbs. If you have specific sizing concerns, please contact our team and we will ensure you get the right boat.
Are there restrooms at the launch site?
Yes, we have clean washroom facilities located right at our marina at Water's Edge Campground for you to use before getting geared up. There are no washrooms on the water.
What time of day is best for kayaking?
Morning tours usually offer the calmest waters, making it perfect for beginners and reflective photography. Evening or sunset paddles offer dramatic lighting and often increased wildlife activity.
Do you offer kayak rentals without a guide?
Yes. We offer independent kayak and paddleboard rentals. However, due to the unpredictable winds of the fjord, unguided rentals are reserved strictly for paddlers with prior sea kayaking experience.
What is your cancellation policy?
We offer a refund minus a 15% administration fee for cancellations made 48 hours or more in advance. Tours cancelled within 48 hours of departure are completely non-refundable.
Do I need to book my kayak tour in advance?
Highly recommended. Because we strictly limit our group sizes for safety and quality, our kayak tours sell out very quickly in July and August. Please book online to secure your spot.
